Daniel Hannan - October 2009

....... “What a relief to come back to my Home Counties constituency. This weekend was typical: on Friday, I addressed a lunch in the Betjemanesque setting of the St George’s Hill tennis club in Weybridge – which, according to some surveys, is the happiest town in Britain. Then I met students at Surrey University in Guildford. (They were mainly Conservatives, and very engaging Conservatives, but there was one delightful Labour man who follows this blog and agrees with its contention that Lefties ought to support direct democracy.) Yesterday, I spoke at the village hall in Upper Beeding, near Steyning in West Sussex.

As always when addressing Conservative audiences, I was struck by how unpolitical most Tories are. They are good citizens, who run almost every local voluntary association, from the British Legion to the Neighbourhood Watch. Although they dislike paying tax, they give generously to charity. They have travelled widely, and very often lived abroad, but they regard the EU as a racket. And they are utterly without the self-righteous hatred of the other side that one so often finds on the Left.” ....... more
