John Cope visits Walton

John Cope is a dedicated local councillor and your candidate to be the next MP for Esher and Walton.

Living between Hersham and Walton with his partner and their dog, John’s hard work for residents and businesses has already been seen in his own ward of Walton and across the Borough. From a record number of police officers protecting our streets, to pressuring the Council to revive our high streets and abandon their plans to hike parking charges, John has been relentless in holding the Council to account and protecting local shoppers, our local economy, and local workers.

John was born on a Doncaster council estate before being adopted by his family, whose backgrounds were in the Sheffield mines, HM Armed Forces, and small business. The family shop sold machinery and parts to local factories and the docks.

Adoption, attending a state school, and the chance to study at Nottingham University resulted in John’s life taking a very different path from the one it could have.

He was the first person in his immediate family to achieve ‘A’ levels, let alone a degree. That’s why he’s felt driven to dedicate his career to improving further the opportunities he was given: through apprenticeships and vocational education.

John is executive director at the charity UCAS—the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.

When he put himself forward to be our next MP, John told us:

I’m ambitious for Esher and Walton. I’m ambitious for our young people and the power of education. And I want to champion them both in Parliament to effect real change locally.

John’s experience in education, business, and as a proven, effective local campaigner is what our area needs fighting its corner in Westminster.
